Marcia Hadjimarkos

Picture of Marcia HadjimarkosMarcia Hadjimarkos’ performances are described as “imaginatively realised, full-blooded, and loving”, “gentle, almost introverted yet brilliantly intelligent”, and “dynamic, free, and powerfully shaped”, fell in love with keyboard instruments at the age of four when she received her first record, a 45 of “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy “ and heard the magical sound of the celesta.

Piano lessons continued through secondary school in Portland, Oregon. She graduated with a double major in piano performance and French literature from the University of Iowa, inspired by the harpsichord and the revelatory power of historic instruments. A move to Europe with the discovery of the many facets of the clavichord and the historic piano. She studied the latter with Jos Van Immerseel at the Paris Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique, and since then has been immersed in keyboards old and new with concerts, recordings and teaching. During the last 20-odd years, spent mostly in rural Burgundy, Marcia has become an internationally recognized specialist on the fortepiano and clavichord, performing frequently in solo recitals as well as chamber music and lieder concerts (with Emma Kirkby, Julianne Baird and Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, among others). She gives early piano and clavichord master classes in France and abroad, and has taught modern piano in a variety of settings. She has also been involved in operetta, written and translated numerous texts about music and instruments, and published a piano work by Dussek.

She and the actor Philippe Borrini regularly perform ‘The Intimate Mozart’, a program that traces the lives of Mozart and his family through their letters and music. Her 8-recital performance of he complete Haydn sonatas on a variety of early keyboards met with critical success, as have her recordings, which include Mozart Sonatas and Rondos on fortepiano (Avie), Haydn Sonatas on the clavichord (Zig-Zag), Character Pieces by C.P.E. Bach on clavichord and fortepiano (Zig-Zag), Haydn songs & cantatas with Emma Kirkby (Brilliant Classics) and Schubert Dances and Sonata on fortepiano (Arabesque). These have earned a Diapason d’Or, 5 star reviews in Goldberg, Musica, and Fonoforum, and enthusiastic articles in Fanfare, Télérama, Gramophone and Le Monde de la Musique. Marcia also collaborated with Hugo Reyne (czakan) on a recording entitled “Viennoiseries Musicales” (Musiques à la Chabotterie).

Marcia Hadjimarkos received degrees in piano performance and French literature from the University of Iowa. She has been devoted to the fortepiano and clavichord since the 1980s, and studied with Jos van Immerseel at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in 1993-94. Her career as an early keyboard specialist takes her to venues across Europe (Festival International de la Roque d’Anthéron, Folle Journée de Nantes, Rencontres Harmoniques de Lausanne, the Prague Mozart Museum) where she performs on a variety of instruments ranging from Cristofori’s prototype to the French romantic piano.

In 1995 she presented the highly-acclaimed French premiere of the complete Haydn keyboard sonatas in a series of eight recitals. Her recording of Haydn sonatas on the clavichord (Zig-Zag Territoires) was awarded a Diapason d’Or in 1999 and received highest praise from the international press; her second CD, C.P.E. Bach’s Character Pieces (Zig-Zag Territoires, 2002) was the recipient of unanimous critical acclaim. Marcia Hadjimarkos also appears as a chamber musician, and particularly enjoys the four-hand keyboard repertoire, lieder, operetta, and various combinations of texts and music.
